These recipes come from the kitchens of families across Kerala who cook every day for their elderly parents and grandparents. Each dish is light, soft, and full of comfort — just the way seniors like it.
Note: All recipes are shared by real families from Pulso’s community. They’ve been slightly adjusted to suit common senior nutrition needs — less oil, mild spices, and more fiber.
1) Soft rice with drumstick leaf thoran
A small bowl of Kerala rice paired with steamed moringa leaves (drumstick leaf) sautéed with coconut and garlic. Light, iron-rich, and easy to chew. Serve with rasam or curd.
2) Idiyappam with mashed banana
Loved for breakfast — soft idiyappams mixed with ripe banana and a drizzle of warm milk. Naturally sweet and high in potassium.
3) Vegetable kichdi (light on spice)
A comforting one-pot meal made from rice, dal, and vegetables like pumpkin or carrots. Add a spoon of ghee for flavour and energy.
4) Steamed fish with raw mango gravy
A coastal favourite. The fish is steamed, not fried, and topped with a light mango-coconut gravy. Rich in protein and omega-3.
5) Tender coconut pudding
Chilled and soft dessert made from tender coconut water, pulp, and a little agar or china grass. Gentle on the stomach and hydrating.
6) Ragi porridge with jaggery
Made from ragi powder, milk, and a touch of jaggery. Calcium-rich and ideal for morning or evening energy.
Family tip from Ernakulam
“We cook simple food with less salt and masala, but add small sides — like a spoon of pickle or papadam — to keep the meal interesting,” says Marykutty, 72, from Kakkanad.
Try this week: Replace one heavy dinner with a lighter rice-thoran combo. Your digestion will thank you!
